Regular Check Ups

Healthy teeth and gums require regular care and attention. This is vital for your oral health as well as your general health.

At Hadley Green Dental we advise all of our patients to visit us regularly to ensure your mouth stays healthy.

Our aim is to be your preventative dentistry practitioner, meaning that we want to help prevent you from developing advanced dental diseases. We pride ourselves on getting to know our patients and all their dental needs. Seeing us regularly helps us build a general overview of your oral health and helps us provide any necessary advice.

Your dental exam checklist

When you visit our dental team for a routine appointment, we complete a dental exam check list  to make sure you receive the right treatment and leave our surgery feeling confident about the health of your teeth and gums.

  • First of all, tell us your concerns: This is your opportunity to inform us of any specific concerns that you may have, and what has been going on with your oral health
  • Tell us about your medical history: We take time to ask about any medication you are taking or any medical treatment you are currently receiving for any conditions.
  • Tell us about your oral/dental history. This helps us to develop the right treatment plan required for you.
  • We will examine the exterior of your mouth: We will check your lips, neck, enlarged lymph nodes and your  jaw joints for (TMJ)  clicks, pain and sounds.
  • We will then carry out an oral cancer check: As experts in dental health, we will examine your mouth for any unusual signs or symptoms that could indicate oral cancer. This involves checking your tongue,  roof and floor of the mouth and throat.
  • We will examine all of your teeth to ensure that they are strong and healthy.  We will also look for any visible signs of decay, cracks,  or tooth wear.
  • Gum Check: We will check if your gums are healthy and pink, as they should be. Gum disease is a major cause of many issues and can affect your overall health. We therefore  thoroughly examine  your gums for any signs of developing or established gum disease, checking for any plaque build-up, loose teeth and gum recession.
  • We will examine existing dental work and restorations: We will look at previous(if any), fillings, bridges or implants to ensure they are functioning as they should be and firmly in place
  • You may need an x-ray: During the course of our examination, we may want to have a closer look at your teeth and jaw bone structure.
  • We will check your bite: This is to ensure your teeth are in correct alignment and haven’t been affected by tooth wear and teeth grinding
  • We will make sure that you’re happy with your smile: Do you have any concerns about the shape, colour or positioning of your teeth? Let us know and we can provide some advice
  • We will review your current dental care regime. We will let you know if your brushing and flossing routine is working and we may also advise you on what sort of products could help improve your oral health

Our aim is to draw up a care regime that is specific for you.

Caring for your teeth and gums is an important part of your daily routine. Call us on 0208 4493315  to book your check-up now.

Crowns

Broken or fractured teeth may require a crown.

If you have a broken tooth/teeth or your teeth have been affected by decay, your Hadley Green Dental practitioner may recommend a dental crown to restore its strength and appearance.

Crowns are made and fitted over the remaining tooth structure. They can be made from a variety of tooth coloured materials such as porcelain, resin, or ceramic. Metallic crowns are also used, as well as crowns made from a combination of metal and porcelain.

Crowns help to protect a tooth from further damage, provide strength, replace discoloured teeth or can be used to anchor a bridge into place.

Your Hadley Green Dental practitioner will discuss your crown and treatment options available to you.

If you do  require a crown, your natural tooth will be prepared so that the crown that be fitted.

A temporary crown will be provided whilst you wait for a permanent crown.  At your next appointment, the  temporary crown will be replaced and  the permanent crown bonded to your natural tooth.

On average crowns can last up to 15 years but have been known to last much longer when cared for properly.

Your dentist will show you how to look after your new crown.

Bridges

Missing one or more teeth?
A Dental bridge may be the solution for you.

Patients who have lost one or more teeth often want a quick, effective way to restore their smile. At Hadley Green Dental, we offer our patients dental bridges made of porcelain, gold or alloy. Porcelain is often the most popular choice as it is tooth-coloured and blends in with your other teeth.

If a bridge is a suitable option for you, the treatment process will usually take place over two appointments.. If you require a bridge, the teeth adjacent to the gap will need to be prepared and fitted with crowns to support the bridge. For example, if you are having a traditional dental bridge fitted, the crowns act as anchors, holding the bridge in place. If the dentist uses a cantilever bridge, only one  adjacent tooth will be required to support the restoration.

There are usually a few options for bridges. At HGD we would normally recommend  a porcelain bridge, which  is usually not noticeable.  A dental bridge can last a lifetime if cared for properly. We will show you  how to best look after your  bridge once treatment has been completed.

Dentures

If you have lost multiple teeth or your entire upper or lower set of teeth, removable dentures provide a viable long-lasting alternative. Dentures are often the quickest and easiest solution in this situation.

Designed to look like natural teeth and gums, a denture appliance blends in with the remaining natural teeth or completely replaces the upper or lower set. Dentures restore facial shape and function for those who have experienced tooth loss.
We will show you how to use your denture, how to apply denture adhesive as well as how to best look after your dentures. If you currently wear a denture and are having problems with the way it fits, we can help to address this issue and help you feel more comfortable.

Modern dentistry affords patients other options for missing teeth, or to restore your smile and function. Talk to your dentist about alternatives.

Tooth Extraction

If a tooth is severely damaged, removing it may be the only option.

At Hadley Green Dental we aim to save your natural teeth as much as possible, however an extraction may be necessary due to infection, severe decay or pain. Teeth may also need to be extracted prior to orthodontic (braces) treatment.

Prior to your tooth being removed, we will explain the process so you know the steps that will be taken.  In most cases the tooth extraction is a quick procedure and will take place over two appointments.

The first appointment is an assessment and consultation to  examine your teeth and the second appointment for the extraction procedure.

The majority of cases can be  managed with local anaesthetic applied to the affected area. Our dentists are highly experienced and skilled and will ensure the best possible care during the procedure.

During the procedure, your mouth will be numbed with a local anaesthetic, and you may have some discomfort but your dentist will advise you about which over the counter medications may help.

You will also be advised  as to what to do following the removal of the tooth.  Post procedure instructions will be provided.

Fillings

A filling is used to restore a cavity within a tooth. Often caused by tooth decay or fractures, a filling restores the affected tooth to strengthen and protect it from further deterioration.

At Hadley Green Dental, we offer a variety of filling types which includes metal, composite resin, amalgam or porcelain. White fillings are an attractive alternative to the traditional amalgam filling.

At your consultation,  your dentist examines your mouth, and will  check for holes or cavities.

Most patients prefer white fillings because they are tooth-coloured and are not obviously detectable..

Metal fillings are usually only used towards the back of the mouth so they are not immediately visible. Please discuss the different options with your dentist.

Root Canal

Tooth decay or an infection in the tooth can lead to the nerve or pulp of the tooth also becoming infected.

Root canal therapy, also known as endodontic therapy is when the inside of an infected tooth is cleaned out and the infection is removed. It is a delicate and highly skilled procedure which we can perform to alleviate a patient’s pain or discomfort.

It is important to treat a dental nerve infection as soon as possible to avoid further complications such as the development of an abscess or discoloration.

To complete the procedure, it is necessary to fill  the tooth and cover the exposed area. It may be necessary to also have  a crown made for extra support.

It may take two or three appointments to completely resolve the issue. We will do all we can to make the process as comfortable as possible. Sometimes a referral to an endodontic specialist may be necessary

If you decide against root canal treatment,  infection in the nerve in your tooth could die and cause the tooth to become discoloured. This will then mean that the tooth may need to be extracted.

Dental Hygienist

Healthy teeth and gums are a vital part of your oral and general health. It is important to regularly visit the hygienist in order that you meet and maintain this goal.

At Hadley Green Dental, visiting the hygienist is an important part of our preventative dentistry care program. The key to good oral health is regular dental hygiene. Some common sgns of problems with your oral health are bleeding gums, loose teeth and bad breath. We’re here to help you take care of your teeth and gums

Dental hygiene starts at home. Brushing twice daily and cleaning in-between your tooth is essential to maintain good levels of oral hygiene.

We at Hadley Green Dental, therefore always recommend you come and see us for regular check-ups as well as seeing our experienced hygienists to get your teeth as clean as possible.

If you have stained teeth caused by smoking, drinking tea, coffee or red wine then you can see our hygienist for a platinum airflow polish. This is an advanced painless polishing system which will leave you with a whiter, brighter smile.

Our hygienists help you keep your mouth and teeth as fresh as possible. They  are trained to spot any problems that may require a dentist’s expertise. At Hadley Green Dental,  our hygienists will thoroughly clean your teeth and gums leaving your mouth  noticeably fresher and cleaner.

Not looking after your teeth or gums properly can cause a multitude of problems including:

Build-up of plaque on the teeth and gums
Decay causing cavities in the teeth
Bad breath
Gum disease

Yes, ideally, you should visit both. A dentist will see you for routine check-ups or treatment, whereas a hygienist will see you for ‘maintenance’ appointments. At your next visit to Hadley Green Dental, check with our team to see when your last appointment with the dentist or hygienist was and we can plan from there.

How long does a hygienist appointment take? This depends on each individual patient. However, on average, your first session should take approx 60 minutes to enable a thorough assessment, for advice and  treatment.  Follow up appointments with the hygienist should take 30 or 45 minutes

Can I see the hygienist directly, without seeing a dentist?

It is possible to book an appointment directly with our hygienist without seeing the dentist, but please note –  you will not be under the  care of any dentist at Hadley Green Dental.  If any problems such as tooth decay, fractures or abscesses are identified, the hygienist will not be able to provide you with a full examination, diagnosis, treatment plan or treatment.

However,  if our hygienists do notice any problems during your session, they will recommend that you either find a dentist or book to see one of our dentists at Hadley Green Dental.
